Six gold medallists at the London Paralympic Games
were among 155 people conferred with national honours in Abuja on Monday
by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Each of them received the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) award.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that those honoured are Loveline Obiji, Ivory Nwokorie, Esther Oyema, Joy, Grace Anozie and Yakubu Adesokan
“It is an honour given to me which means I have to
work very hard to maintain my position and to make my state proud from
this moment on,” Obiji said.
On her part, Anozie said she was happy that she had been honoured with such a prestigious award.
She said she was grateful to God and the President
for deeming them fit for the award, adding that they had won laurels in
the past and nobody recognised them.
“I thank President Goodluck Jonathan for the award as this makes us to know that there is ability in every disability.
“The award is telling me to go and work harder to achieve more because I know we are heading somewhere,” she said.
In her comments, Onaolapo said this was her first outing and was happy that she won a gold medal.
She promised to work very hard to bring more honours to the country.
Jonathan had on Saturday in Abuja rewarded the entire
members of the Nigerian team to the 2012 London Paralympic Games and
the national under-20 women’s football team.
At a reception held for both teams, the President
announced a cash reward of N5m for each gold medallist, N3m for each of
the five silver medallists and N2m each for Nneji Victoria and Iyiazi
Eucharia, who won bronze medals.
Other members of the Paralympic team who did not win any medal at the Games were also rewarded with N500,000 each.
President Jonathan further announced N1m reward for members of the
Falconets who finished fourth at the U-20 FIFA World Cup in Japan, while
their officials are to receive N1.2 m each.kudos to Mr President
